Banks Burger is a family-owned burger joint in the heart of Newlands. Their business has flourished in the last year and has seen the start of monthly competitions, innovative seasonal burgers, and the production of fresh merchandise like caps and T-shirts. Patrons are welcomed by the smiles of Murray and Liam, the managers of the restaurant. The atmosphere is always warm and relaxed but equally fresh and exciting.
The Paradox That Works
Part of why I love this place is that the meals are prepared on site, by hand. The burger buns are baked each morning and every ingredient is added with care. This hands-on approach to fast-food has deemed the meals ‘healthy junk food’. The idea behind the restaurant was to bring authentic food to a take-away environment, and the combination has been quite successful.
The menu is simple but quite customisable as the meal is prepare from scratch. There is a choice of sides including hand-cut potato chips, hand-cut sweet potato chips or coleslaw. For those who want, there is a bun-less option that sees the patty covered in lettuce. There is a vegetarian option for a meat-free meal, and a friend who has tried the vegetarian burger has said that it tastes like real beef. Milkshakes from Banks are absolutely heavenly and just the right thickness, which not many restaurants achieve. Overall the food is prepared to perfection and served with kindness.
As a struggling student, I know the need for good food on a budget. The meals at Banks are extremely affordable and excellent value for money as their portion sizes are generous. On Wednesdays they have a combo special where a cheese burger combo (cheese burger, side and drink) goes for R50. That’s my kind of bargain. There is also a monthly competition where one lucky Instagram follower could win two free meals by sharig a snap of their Banks experience and using a special hashtag (details can be found on Instagram @banksburger).
